He had ten thousand men.
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And he marched them down again.
And when you're up, you're up.
And when you're down, you're down.
And when you're only halfway up,
You're neither up nor down."
Throughout my adult life, and even during my quasi-adulthood (read: high school), I have repeatedly grown my hair out long and then chopped it all off again. During the almost three years that Hugh and I have been married, I have already done this twice, in addition to one slightly disastrous "trim," one cut to the shoulders, and one long layered cut. I think I just get restless. I chop my hair off, then it slowly millimeters it's way back down, then one day I realize that it has once again reached the perfect length, and then a few days later I'm tired of it and decide that something has to change so I chop it off again. It's like moving furniture around.
It's very easy to go from long hair mode into short hair mode. All you have to do is walk into your local salon and tell them to take it all off. Then an hour later a whole new you walks out. The problem is that it's a lot harder to go in the other direction. In order to get from short mode back into long mode you have to pass through the dangers of the fire swamp.
Okay, no you don't. But wouldn't it be nice if that's all it took? What you actually have to do is go through month after agonizing month of blah-ful in-between mode.

The easy solution, of course, would be to go back in and have them take off the two inches that make up the difference between "short" and "in-between" and just have short hair forever. But, since what I really want is to get back to long again, that wouldn't exactly help.

So, I guess I'll just have to be patient, and maybe in a couple of years I'll have long hair again. Meanwhile, the Grand Old Duke of York and I will just hang out on this hill.

Yeah, I've been thinking of cutting my hair lately but then I think of how long it will take to grow it back out. Kind of stinks that there is no miracle growth to have long hair over night. :(
In my similar adventures I have found that my hair takes about twice as long to grow as a normal person (average hair grows 1/2 inch per month, mine grows 1/4 inch per month.) When we got married I made Kevin promise he would never let me cut my hair short again, no matter how much I wanted it because it wouldn't be worth the years it took to grow it back out.
try coloring instead of coloring---adds that extra look while keeping the hair. of course then you have to do follow-up coloring and that can be even more disastrous than going through the in between stages of hair growth. i don't think there is a solution to this short/long hair problem---its vicious cycle will go on until one day we'll be old and only have short old lady hair, then all our problems will be over...or maybe just beginning? :)
(coloring instead of cutting :) )
This post captures my sentiments really well, down to the comparison to moving furniture. (My furniture has been in one place for almost a month and late at night, I start itching to move it. So far, I've showed considerable restraint.) I think I keep growing it back out for the thrilling agony of deciding to cut it or not. I think your hair looks really cute in that bottom picture!
Ok, really what I want to know is how did you manage to get a picture of you taken from the top corner of the bathroom? That looks like it was from some sort of security camera?!?
Hugh took the picture of the bathroom. He was trying to take a picture without me noticing, so he put his hand up above the door. Obviously, from my expression, he didn't succeed. Also, I'm 5 months pregnant in that picture. Bet you didn't notice. :)
The yo-yo hair style! That is me...and unfortunately, I hear you about the awful in-between time...ew. That is also me right now. Good luck, and hope it grows fast!
