Selective

Before I married Hugh, I never thought of myself as a picky eater.  My younger brothers did a lot of whining about having to eat various vegetables, and one of my little sisters cringes away from just about anything healthy.  So with them to compare myself to, I came to the conclusion that I was definitely not picky.  When Hugh and I got married, however, and we started, as a result, to go to various functions with his family that involved food, I found myself saying over and over again that I didn't particularly like such-and-such.  Before everybody goes thinking that I'm ill-mannered, it wasn't because I was refusing everything that the various members of Hugh's family served me.  Hugh's family is simply very interested in food and therefore it is a popular topic of conversation among them.  During the course of this conversation, one or another of them asked me outright if I liked something.

The thing is not that I dislike all variety of dishes.  In fact, in the few minutes that I've thought about it, I can only come up with a few things that I actually dislike:  peas, sweet potatoes, shellfish, bananas, octopus, and coconut.  That's it.  Really.  I'll even eat peas and bananas because I think they're good for me, and I think that coconut is decent if it's toasted.  The real thing is that there are a lot of foods that I just don't think are worth eating.  This includes many, if not most, popular snack and dessert foods.... like pie.  I almost got disowned when I admitted that I didn't really like pie.  Now, if eating pie produced the same results as eating spinach, then I would eat it, but it doesn't, so I'd just rather not.  (And frankly, I like spinach better anyway.)  Some things just don't bring me enough pleasure to be worth the calories they contain (or the yucky just-ate-junk-food feeling you get when you eat them), and some things just aren't as yummy as other things that are just as good for you.
So, what I'm really trying to say is, I'm not picky.  I'm just, uh.... selective.
P. S.  Here's a picture of our independent sitter.
He's not picky either... Mmmmm leaves!
