Pumpkins for Sale

This week the three-year-old granddaughter of a couple in our neighborhood was selling pumpkins.  She grew them herself, and the proceeds from the sale are going toward her college education.  Not only is that one of the best ideas I've ever heard, but purchasing pumpkins from an adorable little three-year-old is also pretty irresistible.  These are the varicolored specimens that I acquired.
So... now that I have them, does anybody know what to do with a pumpkin?  (Something a little more culinary than making Jack-O-Lanterns?)  I have a fair amount of experience with the sterilized, pre-everythinged pureed version, but I must admit that a pumpkin in all of its savage organic glory is a little daunting.

I'll ask my friend for her fabulous fresh pumpkin bread and pumpkin cookies recipe. ;)

So, I don't know if you'd be interested in making your own pumpkin puree, but here's a way to do it! It's actually pretty simple :). Then you could make pumpkin butter here. Hope this helps, or at least creates ideas! :)

if they are sugar pumpkins you can make pumpkin pie, i've also read about pitting the pumpkin filling it with some sort of stew (pumpkin pieces and all) and baking it in the oven. it not only flavors the stew, but acts as a crock pot of sorts as well. we haven't tried it yet, but every year it is on the list of things to do :)
